If you want tighter curls rather than waves, as soon as you take your hair off of  the curling iron put it up in a curler, hair spray lightly and let it cool.  This works well for me because I have fine hair, and hair spraying before and after just DOES NOT work for me, it weighs my hair down and fries it! Curlers are the way to go, they are super cheap and can be found anywhere!
